In a major step toward reimagining urban living through sustainability, Hiranandani Communities and Krisala Developers have signed a strategic Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI), onboarding the organization as a knowledge partner for their flagship 105-acre integrated township in North Hinjewadi, Pune.

This partnership marks a first-of-its-kind initiative in the city’s real estate sector, where sustainability, air quality management, and enhanced livability are being placed at the core of township planning, development, and execution. The township, jointly developed by Hiranandani Communities and Krisala Developers, is already being seen as a benchmark in smart urbanism and sustainable infrastructure.

As part of the collaboration, TERI will guide the planning and execution of key environmental measures, with a focus on maintaining optimal Air Quality Index (AQI) levels and achieving a high Livability Index. The project also targets IGBC Green Township Platinum certification, making it one of India’s most progressive residential ecosystems.

Speaking on the occasion, Aakash Agarwal, Managing Director, Krisala Developers, said: “This partnership with TERI aligns perfectly with our vision of creating an integrated township that doesn’t just house people, but nurtures them. Sustainability is not a buzzword for us—it’s the foundation. With TERI’s expertise, we’re not only safeguarding the site’s natural strengths like air quality, greenery and water bodies, but also building an ecosystem that meets future expectations of health, climate resilience, and long-term value. This is about setting a new standard for what modern, responsible development should look like in India.”

The two-day workshop held on 22nd and 23rd May saw active participation from cross-functional teams, including construction, MEP, landscaping, and design, in joint sessions with TERI experts. Key recommendations were discussed for air pollution control, resource efficiency, and integration of intelligent sustainability tracking systems.

Sanjay Seth, Senior Director, Sustainable Infrastructure at TERI and CEO of GRIHA Council, remarked: “This is a timely and ambitious initiative. By integrating air quality and livability metrics at the core of township development, Hiranandani Communities and Krisala Developers are showcasing what future-ready real estate looks like. We are pleased to be associated with a project that goes beyond compliance and focuses on long-term environmental and human health impact. Our role will include ongoing advisory, monitoring, and capacity building to ensure these standards are achieved and maintained.”

The township will feature several forward-thinking interventions such as outdoor air quality monitoring, micro-climatic planning, EV charging infrastructure, biophilic landscaping, dust suppression during construction, and water- and energy-efficient systems. These measures aim to reduce the carbon footprint, enhance health outcomes, and offer long-term cost savings to residents.

By embedding sustainability into the DNA of its planning, Hiranandani–Krisala’s integrated township is poised to become a model for climate-resilient, livable urban development, not just for Pune but across India.

For over a month, Dehradun has been undergoing a significant beautification drive at four of its major landmarks. However, while the projects aim to enhance the city’s appeal, a growing number of residents are expressing dissatisfaction, citing a familiar pattern of being excluded from the planning process.

Dehradun Smart City Limited (DSCL) is spearheading the landscaping and beautification efforts at Dilaram Chowk, Clock Tower, Sai Mandir Chowk, and Kuthal Gate. Additionally, drainage upgrades are underway at the ISBT. Officials estimate the total cost of these projects to be around Rs.10 crore, with a stated goal of transforming public spaces with modular designs to improve cleanliness and attract tourists. Sources reveal that these projects were specifically assigned to DSCL to utilize remaining funds before the Smart Cities Mission was dissolved on March 31 of this year.

However, the initiative has drawn sharp criticism from local activists and civic bodies. “Extensive beautification was already carried out just a year and a half ago for the Global Investors’ Summit, costing taxpayers lakhs. Now we’re starting from scratch again instead of maintaining existing work. This is a blatant misuse of resources,” stated social activist Anoop Nautiyal.

Nautiyal also highlighted the glaring absence of public engagement in the planning stages. “Citizen involvement was completely absent from the process. If plans were shared publicly, feedback and suggestions could be included. Lakhs were spent to build Brahmakamal Chowk, only to dismantle it later. The Clock Tower has undergone multiple redesigns in recent years. This culture of working in silos is disappointing, and authorities must change their mindset,” he added, emphasizing the need for transparent and collaborative development.

Despite these concerns, administrative officials maintain that the revamped landmarks will incorporate local “pahadi” aesthetics and contribute to smoother traffic flow with the introduction of new slip roads and signals. Tirath Pal, ACEO of DSCL, confirmed, “Most of the work will be done by the end of June.” Following these projects, the only major active Smart City initiative remaining in Dehradun is the Rs.206 crore Green Building initiative.

Meanwhile, civic bodies have also voiced their reservations, particularly concerning the Clock Tower area, which falls under the jurisdiction of the Dehradun Municipal Corporation (DMC). A senior DMC official, speaking anonymously, expressed concerns about potential coordination and maintenance issues. “Multiple agencies working independently often lead to coordination and maintenance issues, as we’ve seen with previous projects,” the official noted, underscoring the challenges of fragmented project management.

The ongoing beautification work thus presents a mixed picture, balancing aesthetic improvements and urban development goals against community concerns about public participation and the optimal use of public funds.

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has issued Expressions of Interest (EOI) from developers for the ambitious redevelopment of 64 slum rehabilitation schemes located on municipal lands across Mumbai. The projects will proceed under Regulation 33(10) of DCPR-2034, aligning with the Development Control and Promotion Regulations (DCPR-2034) norms and applicable government policies.

These slum clusters are situated in various parts of the city, including prominent areas such as Shimpoli in Borivli, Goregaon East, Malad East, Lower Parel, Dindoshi, Wadala, Govandi, and Ghatkopar. Developers selected for these projects will be responsible for the entire redevelopment process, encompassing slum surveys, preparation of redevelopment plans, securing necessary permissions, construction of both rehabilitation and sale components, and post-occupancy maintenance. The BMC has stipulated that only developers with prior experience in slum or housing rehabilitation who meet the required technical and financial criteria will be considered.

The EOI was formally published in newspapers. A civic official confirmed that the detailed EOI document, including eligibility conditions, scope of work, and submission guidelines, has been available on the BMC’s official website since May 14, 2025. A pre-bid meeting with interested developers is scheduled for today, May 23, 2025. The deadline for submitting bids is June 10, 2025, with the eligibility (Packet A) and technical (Packet B) bids slated for opening on the same day. Technical scrutiny is expected to be completed by June 17, 2025, followed by the tentative opening of financial proposals (Packet C) at 4:00 PM on the same day. The BMC stated that this initiative aims to raise public awareness, encourage participation from qualified developers, and foster an inclusive redevelopment vision for the city.

However, the BMC’s move has not been without criticism. Opposition parties have raised concerns regarding the civic body’s capacity to handle such large-scale Slum Rehabilitation Authority (SRA) projects. “BMC has been given the powers of the Chief Executive Officer of the Slum Rehabilitation Authority for these 64 projects. It has also been granted the powers of the Planning Authority for the area of these SR schemes. However, BMC lacks experience in executing SRA projects,” stated MLA Rais Shaikh, articulating the opposition’s apprehension.

Lucknow is set to receive a substantial facelift with the approval of Rs.200 crore for several key infrastructure and beautification projects. The funding was sanctioned during a recent Infrastructure Fund Committee meeting chaired by Divisional Commissioner Roshan Jacob, aiming to boost the city’s Green Corridor, rejuvenate its lakes, and restore historical landmarks.

A significant portion, approximately Rs.90 crore, has been allocated to fast-track the development of the Green Corridor from Basant Kunj to Pipraghat. This includes Rs.50 crore for constructing an embankment between Pipraghat and Shaheed Path, Rs.15 crore for another embankment leading to Ekana Stadium, and Rs.10 crore for a road overbridge and VIP spur at the Pipraghat railway crossing. An additional Rs.15 crore will cover utility shifting, undergrounding power lines, signage, rotary development, and other associated works.

Environmental conservation efforts are also a priority, with over Rs.10 crore earmarked for horticulture, irrigation, and beautification of Shaheed Path. Furthermore, Rs.8 crore will be dedicated to the conservation of Motijheel, Jamuna, and Eldeco lakes. Work on a cofferdam at the CG City wetland site is already nearing completion.

Adding to the city’s green spaces, a tropical park will be developed near Lakshman Mela Ground on the Gomti riverfront at a cost of Rs.3 crore. An entertainment park is also in the planning stages for Eco Garden, set to be developed under a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model. To enhance pedestrian safety and movement, a new foot overbridge will be constructed near Lulu Mall on Shaheed Path.

Urban aesthetic improvements and cultural preservation will receive Rs.10 crore for projects including a musical fountain at Neembu Park in Hussainabad, façade enhancement from Rumi Gate to Chhota Imambara, electrification of the museum block, development of a parking area near the food court, and upgrades to nearby roads. An additional Rs.4 crore will be utilized for placemaking initiatives at Hazratganj crossing and its surrounding streets.

City parks are also slated for enhancement, with open gyms to be installed in 50 locations, and sculptures to be placed at key intersections and major roads.

Improvements to street lighting and drainage systems across the city under various schemes are also part of the comprehensive plan.

In terms of heritage preservation, Rs.5 crore has been set aside for the restoration of the historic Rifa-e-Aam Club in Wazirganj. Additionally, the Amiruddaula Library in Kaiserbagh will be converted into a museum with a budget of Rs.2 crore.

The LDA Vice Chairperson commented on these initiatives, stating, “With these initiatives, LDA aims to not only improve infrastructure but also enrich the aesthetic and ecological profile of Lucknow.”
