Factors such as safety, operator comfort, and ease of operations are crucial in mining equipment. What are the steps undertaken by you to provide the same.
It is no secret that each mine is unique and presents specific set of challenges when it comes to safe & efficient operation. Mining safety has improved over time due to new technology, better management, and stricter regulations.
Technology
Real-time monitoring: Sensors and alarms provide early warnings of hazards so that miners can evacuate or take action
Automation: Autonomous vehicles, drilling, and tunneling systems, drones, and sensors help make mining safer
Data mining: Technology helps classify hidden dangers and predict gas explosions
Management
Training: Employees are trained to improve their knowledge, skills, and awareness
Supervision: Supervisors monitor operations and provide assistance
Collaboration: Management and employees work together to improve safety
Regulations
Standards: Governments set standards and regulations to reduce hazards and risks
Liability: Regulations highlight the responsibility of mine managers to ensure a safe workplace
Other factors
Proactive measures: Wearables and collision-avoiding systems help miners stay safe
Information systems: Intelligent information processing systems help manage and control operations
Despite these improvements, mining still has a higher risk of accidents than other work environments.
Caterpillar’s measures
We believe the best way to drive a culture of safety excellence is to create an environment where each person and team is accountable for their own safety and the safety of those around them. Additionally, we nurture a culture of learning that enhances safety through training and experiences. Caterpillar’s safety culture prioritizes the health and safety of employees, operators, visitors and the public. Caterpillar’s safety programs include a variety of technologies, training, and services.
Safety strategy: Caterpillar’s safety strategy focuses on preventing serious injuries, learning and improving, and demonstrating care.
Safety programs: Caterpillar’s safety programs include technologies like training on simulators, Cat Safety weeks, and the Safety Monitoring Center.
EHS standards: Caterpillar’s environmental, health, and safety (EHS) standards go beyond compliance with laws and regulations.
Safety technologies
- Cat Detect: An intelligent vision camera system that alerts operators when people or objects get close to the machine. Detect provides visibility to the immediate environment around manned or remotely controlled equipment, whether it is a mobile machine or fixed equipment. It also includes a new method of seeing things through smart wearable technology to make better decisions – the ones that save lives, improve response times, locate assets and people, and increase productivity.
- Cat Collision avoidance system: Caterpillar’s new collision avoidance system uses peer-to-peer communications technology installed directly onto a piece of equipment to provide reliable collision avoidance information to operators without the need for an on-site radio network.
- Cat Driver Safety System: Cat Driver Safety System (DSS), a non-intrusive, in-cab fatigue detection technology that instantly alerts operators the moment fatigue or distraction is identified.
- Safety Monitoring Center: Provides customers with visibility into machine and operator information
Safety services
- Fatigue management: One of the most dangerous aspects of fatigue is that it’s very difficult to self-diagnose. By the time an operator realizes fatigue is bearing down, multiple microsleeps have likely already happened. Microsleeps often occur unbeknownst to the operator, and usually go undetected by anyone else on the job site. Caterpillar took the fatigue management strategy to the next level and we offer services to help shift workers manage fatigue.
- Safety training: Caterpillar offers training to help employees learn how to prevent injuries. These are online and offline courses and must for each employee.
- Safety products: Caterpillar offers a variety of safety-focused products to help improve jobsite safety.
