Caterpillar showcased 13-liter engine platform for first time in India at Excon 2023
The Cat C13D is a new 13-liter diesel engine platform designed to achieve best-in-class power density, torque and fuel efficiency for optimizing the performance of heavy-duty off-highway applications. Engineered to Caterpillar’s standards for reliability and productivity, the inline, six-cylinder Cat C13D engine platform is maki cng its Indian debut at Excon 2023.
The engine offers eight power ratings from 340 to 515 kW with up to 3,200 Nm of peak torque. Engine-mounted after-treatment and cooling packs will also be available from the factory to reduce installation and validation costs.
The C13D will come into production in 2026, meeting the emissions standards of higher regulated markets, such as EU Stage V, U.S. EPA Tier 4 Final, China Nonroad Stage IV, Korea Stage V, and Japan 2014, with models available for lesser regulated markets. While in production, the engine will be capable of being certified to future India CEV Stage V and TREM Stage V emission standards while continuing to serve unregulated non-roadable CEVs within India, such as machines with steel tracks like rock crushers and screeners.
By supplying comparable power and torque available from Caterpillar’s current 13-, 15- and single-turbo 18-liter engine platforms, the Cat C13D platform provides an opportunity for original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) to downsize the engine and simplify design, assembly, and supply chain requirements across multiple applications. This consolidation can also reduce maintenance, parts, and technical training complexity for end users. The Cat C13D engine is targeted for a wide range of off-highway equipment, including rock crushers, screeners, and grinders; trenchers; agriculture tractors, harvesters and self-propelled sprayers; woodchippers; material-handling equipment; and large industrial pumps.
“Off-highway OEMs and equipment owners face a rapidly evolving business environment that demands improved worksite productivity and reduced operating costs,” said Steve Ferguson, Senior Vice President of Caterpillar Industrial Power Systems. “Internal combustion engines are the prevailing workhorses on most job sites around the world, which is why we’ve invested in the next-generation Cat C13D diesel engine platform to address their challenges.”
The Cat C13D engine platform has been engineered to deliver the performance, durability, packaging, and ease of maintenance demanded by both manufacturers and buyers of off-highway equipment.
The new engine platform offers up to a 20% increase in power and up to 25% more low-speed torque than the previous generation of Cat engines in its power class. It is designed to perform at altitudes of up to 12,000 ft – maintaining higher power than legacy engines at higher altitudes – and in extreme ambient temperatures as high as 140 F (60 C) and as low as minus 40 F (minus 40 C) with aids.
Engineers have designed the Cat C13D engine for quality, reliability, and easier maintenance through a number of improvements, including integrating components and reducing the number of leak joints by more than 45%. Together, the upgrades result in lower fluids consumption and extended service intervals as long as 1,000 hours, reducing operating costs and downtime.
The new engine platform will be equipped with Cat Digital Services, an integrated suite of robust software and hardware solutions supplying the insight equipment owners need to make decisions on the fly, secure the health of their equipment, and minimize nonproductive time. The new Cat C13D will be fully supported by the global Cat dealer network, which offers genuine Cat parts and services packaged in Customer Value Agreements. Dealer technicians are trained to provide a comprehensive range of maintenance and services that help customers maximize performance and optimize the total cost of ownership of Cat industrial engines.

Perkins introduces 2806FA-E18TAG CPCBIV+ certified engines for India
Perkins is announcing new 2806FA CPCBIV+ certified ratings for the Indian electric power generation industry. The platform will cover two key power nodes, with the 2806FA-E18TAG1 providing up to 477 kW mechanical power at 50 Hz while the 2806FA-E18TAG2 delivers up to 595 kW mechanical power at 50 Hz. With over 90 years of design experience and more than 3 million Perkins-powered generator sets operating around the world, Perkins understands the needs of the power generation industry. This knowledge and expertise have driven the design and development of the 2806FA-E18TAG, a new engine developed specifically for India that will also be built in the country at our Hosur facility.
The 2806FA platform provides excellent cold load acceptance and meets ISO 8528-5 class G2 performance. Steady-state stability at constant speed and load achieves ISO8528-5 class G3 performance. This performance makes the 2806FA ideally suited to a wide range of electric power applications. From a stationary prime source of power to a mobile unit serving the rental sector, the 2806FA performs seamlessly, generating dependable power for everything from job sites to critical installations, including hospitals and data centres.
The 2806FA is economical as well; with an improvement in fuel efficiency over its CPCBII predecessor and with an excellent diesel exhaust fluid-to-fuel ratio, the 2806FA helps control the cost of operation. The high-efficiency selective catalytic reduction (SCR) after treatment is paired with a 66-litre diesel exhaust fluid tank that enables extended run time between fills.
Keeping the power on
“Reliable electric power is not an option; it’s a fundamental need to keep operations running, whether that’s for standby when the mains power fails or to meet onsite prime power requirements,” says Abhinav Gupta, general sales manager – South Asia. “Our engines are engineered and expertly crafted to provide reliable, stable and sustainable power for our customers, with the new 2806FA being the latest in a long line of products that also deliver a low total cost of ownership for our customers in India.”
For generator manufacturers and end users looking to reduce their greenhouse gas emissions, the 2806FA can, subject to the fuel used meeting Perkins’ fuel specifications*, run with biodiesel up to B20 based on a 20 per cent dilution of biodiesel with standard diesel or on 100 per cent hydrotreated vegetable oil (HVO).
Engine features:
The 2806FA produces up to 595 kW mechanical at 50 Hz. The engine features the latest electronics with a single, on-engine electronic control module (ECM) that simplifies wiring harnesses, eases installation, supports future diagnostics and is fully capable of integration with customers’ telematics solutions. The ECM also manages all aspects of aftertreatment operation without operator input.
The new 2806FA-E18TAG1 and 2806FA-E18TAG2 join Perkins’s full line of power solutions developed to meet the reduced emissions needs of customers around the world.
As with all Perkins engines, the new 2806FA is supported by the global support network of 88 distributors covering 185 countries, ensuring stable and sustainable electric power when customers need it, where they need it and how they need it.
