Report- Maha Metro in the Process

Maha Metro in the process of setting up country’s first 4-layer transportation on Kamptee Road

  • Country’s Largest Double Decker Girder Coming Up in Reach-II
  • The 1,634 tonne Huge Structure Fabricated at Butibori Industrial Estate

Maha Metro is in the process of setting up country’s first 4-layer transportation on Kamptee Road. The four layer transportation includes the existing road and the railway track, above it. The flyover and the Metro Via-duct - both being constructed by Maha Metro - form the third and the fourth layer of the transportation system. The via-duct is part of Reach-II, which stretches from Sitabuldi Interchange to Automotive Square. This is the second such unique construction after Balanced Cantilever, which has been erected near Anand Talkies as part of Reach-IV alignment.

The huge structure weighs 1,634 tonnes and has been fabricated at Butibori Industrial Estate. The monolith structure was first fabricated and then dismantled at Butibori and is being shifted to the work site by road. The robust condition of the steel structure can be gauged from the fact that two cranes of 250 tonne capacity were required while erecting it. Similarly, given the height at which the structure would be erected at Gaddigodam, two cranes of 500 tonne capacity would be needed for the same task.

Highlights of the Steel Structure:

  • The girder will be at a height of 24 metres from the ground.
  • The total weight of the girder is 1,634 tonnes.
  • In all, 154 workers took part in the preparation of its spare parts.
  • A 78,000 capacity High Strength Friction Grip (HSFG) bolt was used for erection.

The proposed flyover and Metro Track share the ‘Right of Way’, which effectively means that the two structures have been constructed on the same pier, thus saving space and expenditure in the process. This was all the more essential as the Kamptee Road, on which the structure is being erected is one of the busiest roads of the city. The flyover starts at Automotive Square and ends at LIC Square. One completed, the multi-layer transportation structure will not just add tot eh beauty and charm of the city, but would also effectively reduce traffic congestion on the existing road.
