Irreplaceable Role of Construction Chemicals in Infrastructural Development

Irreplaceable Role of Construction Chemicals in Infrastructural Development

The idea of a fully urbanized world begins with life surrounded by high-rise buildings and complex structures. The construction sector has reached newer heights over the past decades with breakthrough advancements in materials and chemicals that not only fortify the structure of a building, but also increase its aesthetic value.

Construction chemicals are specialty chemicals that help to speed up the process of construction. These chemicals play a foundational role in the development of a building or other structure and are generally combined with materials such as cement or concrete to provide enhanced strength.

Construction chemicals are mainly categorized into concrete admixtures, asphalt modifiers, waterproofing chemicals, flooring compounds, protective coatings, adhesives & sealants, flame retardants, cement grinding aids, joint fillers, concrete curing and jointing compounds, and more. These chemicals find extensive usage in the construction of residential, commercial, and industrial buildings, and civil structures including roads, highways, bridges, canals, dams, airports, railway platforms, and various maintenance &repair and renovation projects.

Rising concerns regarding the safety and durability of residential and industrial structures and growing risks of environmental calamities such as earthquakes, floods, and landslides due to rapid climate change have led to increasing use of these chemicals in the construction industry. These chemicals are combined with a wide range of building materials including cement, concrete, mortar, gravel, and metal to improve their durability, weatherability, and aesthetics. They enhance the performance of these materials, while protecting against damageor degradation caused by water absorption, rebar corrosion, freeze/thaw damage, mold & mildew, efflorescence, harmful ultraviolet (UV) rays, and numerous other factors. Over the recent past, manufacturers have come up with various technologically advanced and cost-effective formulations to amplify the performance of these materials. Silicone resins, process aids and binding products including siloxanes, silanes, blends, additives, and emulsions are some examples of the new formulations being used increasingly all over the world to maximize substrate life, improve aesthetics, and reduce maintenance costs.

Spike in Demand for Sustainable Construction Chemicals is a Key Industry Growth Trend

According to Reports and Data, the global construction chemicals industry accounted for a staggering value of USD 49,510.59 million in 2020 and is expected to reach a significantly higher value over the forecast period, registering a CAGR of 6.23%.

Industry revenue growth can be primarily attributed to rapid urbanization, increasing residential and industrial construction activities worldwide, rising government investments in civil infrastructure development projects, and increasing use of superior-quality, environmentally sustainable construction chemicals. Increasing research activities to develop green and bio-based chemicals for reduced environmental impact is another major factor bolstering the global industry growth.

Top Companies in the Construction Chemicals Industry

Some of the leading companies operating in the global construction chemicals industry include The Dow Chemical Company, BASF SE, Mitsubishi Chemical Holdings, DuPont, Arkema SA, Ashland Inc., Pidilite Industries, Evonik Industries, Fosroc International Limited, Cera-Chem Private Limited, Mapie S.p.A, Bostik Inc., H.B. Fuller, Sika AG, Henkel AG & Company, RPM International Inc., Chembond Chemicals Ltd. and W.R. Grace & Company.

In December 2020, Fosroc, a leading British construction chemicals company, signed a joint venture agreement with the Egypt-based company ChemTech for the manufacture and distribution ofa wide range of advanced construction chemicals and materials. As per the agreement, Fosroc would manage the production operations and the products would be sold worldwide under the Fosroc brand.

In June 2021, JSW Cement, a JSW Group subsidiary specializing in eco-friendlybuilding and construction solutions, tapped into India’s construction chemicals business with the launch of an all-new manufacturing facility in Ballari, Karnataka. Reportedly, the new manufacturing plant – with a robust capacity of 0.3 million tons – will produce a sustainable range of products including the Krysta Leakproof integral crystalline waterproofing compounds, Enduro Plast readymix plaster, and Duraflor floor hardeners.
