In a first, soon India will, to its credit, have the world’s exclusive Green Rating System for High Speed Rail. The rating has been recently launched with the Indian Green Building Council (IGBC) undertaking its formulation in collaboration with the National High Speed Rail Corporation Ltd (NHSRCL). This rating system will be a tool to enable new High Speed Rail (HSR) stations to apply energy efficient concepts during design and construction, in order to further reduce adverse environmental impacts that are measurable.

As we all know that consumers today are getting eco-conscious when it comes to buying any products or services. A recent survey by JLL revealed that a majority of Asia Pacific corporations (70%) are willing to pay a rental premium to lease sustainability-certified buildings in the future. This commitment aligns with broader real estate sustainability developments across Asia Pacific where 40% of corporate occupiers have already adopted net zero targets and another 40% are planning to adopt targets by 2025.

According to the US Green Building Council (USGBC), the construction industry accounts for 40% of worldwide energy usage and estimates that by 2030 emissions from commercial buildings will grow by 1.8%.This is one reason why many building owners are turning to Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED)-certified buildings. With the number of LEED registrations steadily increasing globally, the US currently holds the number one position overall, with a total of 124,212 LEED projects while India currently stands fourth with 2,246 projects.

The concept of Green Buildings has been doing the rounds for quite some time in India, but today it has surely picked up momentum with the government also placing a greater thrust on the eco-efficient construction and electric vehicles to name a few.

With India catching up pace in Green Buildings, we must have SMART EQUIPMENT too to complement growth. The good news is the progress in this area has been very promising and steadfast. Many OEMs have already come up with INTELLIGENT MACHINES that not only enhance productivity but are also eco-friendly. These dual benefits are sure to lure construction companies in capturing GREEN CANVAS and ride the growth wave.

While the Covid-19 pandemic end game is still not in sight, it’s a great time for the entire industry and stakeholders to collaborate and work towards GREENER EXPANSE so that when the Covid-19 dust settles, the industry can quickly get back to normalcy and join the growth bandwagon.
