ATUM, the world’s first Integrated Solar Roof, from Visaka Industries Limited

 

Visaka Industries has been at the forefront, developing sustainable products and meeting demands from domestic and international markets. To address energy demands sustainably, the company launched a path-breaking hybrid roof-top solar product called ATUM – the first of its kind in India.  In an exclusive interview to CONSTRUCTION OPPORTUNITIES, G. VAMSI KRISHNA, JOINT MANAGING DIRECTOR, VISAKA INDUSTRIES LIMITED speaks about the roofing market, impact of covid-19, latest launches and a lot more.

 

 

Give an overview of the Roofing market in India in terms of cost/quality equations, sector challenges, and growth prospects

Visaka Industries Limited’s Cement roofing Division market share is appx. 20% and the total market potential of pan India, which is approximately 38-40 Lac MTS PA. It is also expected that 50% of tar roofs are to be converted into cement roofs and we plan on increasing that number even further.

Visaka Industries Limited is committed to safeguarding the environment and to the advancement of renewable energy. Keeping this in mind, Visaka Industries Limited, have launched ATUM, the world’s first integrated solar roof. ATUM is a roof that generates electricity. It is a completely integrated, seamless solar roof made with poly or mono-crystalline solar cells and cement boards - a highly durable roofing material making it world’s first solar panel which can be directly used as a roof.

Visaka Industries Limited has been granted a 20-year patent for its ATUM Solar Roof. The patent has been granted for the invention titled “Eco-Friendly Energy Generating Roof.” ATUM secured the prestigious UL Certification as per International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) standards. ATUM has also been certified by Campbell Corporation, to take a uniform load of 780 lbs per sqft, a snow load of 2200 lbs, and the jointing mechanism is a patented leak proof system as per American Society for Testing and Material (ASTM) standards. It is a roof which is class A fire rated and designed to take wind speeds of over 150kmph making it hurricane proof. ATUM uses GreenPro Certified material which makes it a highly sustainable, reliable, and safe solar roof.

 

 

What has been the impact of Covid-19 on your business, your expectations from the govt and what are your strategies to overcome these sluggish market conditions and expand market share.

The impact of Covid -19 pandemic was felt across the economy and business segments and Visaka Industries Limited was no exception. However, as the lockdown and other restrictions were lifted, economic activities resumed and the demand for the company’s products improved as compared to that during the initial phases of Covid-19. Currently, we are seeing good growth in our building materials divisions. Our other divisions too have recovered and have resumed normalcy.

We are looking at promoting ATUM very aggressively as we feel there is a market for solar roofs. We are also looking at expanding our product portfolio in the cement roof division.

If we focus on our ATUM Solar Integrated roof, there isn’t a comparable product anywhere else in the world. It is a ROOF that GENERATES ELECTRICITY and that is our USP.

 

 

Which sectors are major demand drivers.

Our ATUM Solar Integrated Roof has also been installed across multiple locations in India including Hyderabad, Mumbai, Chennai, and Cochin. ATUM saw its first successful international installation in the UAE. Cement roofing sheets are used by both B2B and B2C customers.

 

 

Have you launched any new products or launching new products soon?

Visaka Industries Limited’s Cement Roof Division has diversified its portfolio by introducing colour coated metal roofing sheets which are available in a wide range of colours.

Visaka Industries Limited has a PAN-India presence with 12 manufacturing units which are located in Telangana, Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra, West Bengal, Karnataka, Uttar Pradesh, Andhra Pradesh, and Odisha.

 

 

As a manufacturer tell us about the critical challenges faced while introducing high end products in India? To what extent does cost influence a customer’s purchasing decision?

India is a price-sensitive market, and the Indian consumer is a discerning one. However, we have also seen that the Indian consumer understands and appreciates quality products and does not mind purchasing such products.

Our ATUM Solar Integrated Roof, the first of its kind in the world, will continue to be our focus as we promote sustainable products which use clean and green renewable energy and is better than conventional brick-and-mortar roofs because of its longevity and its ease of installation.
