Construction equipment has come a long way and so have the lubricants that keep it running smoothly. As technology for machinery has advanced, the industry has demanded that lubrication and other fluids keep up with changing transmissions and increased load requirements. Armed with technological innovations and companies’ never ending desire to bring the best in class products & services to its customers has made lubricants & oils segments one of the most significant parts of construction equipment to keep them well oiled throughout… writes Prerna Sharma.



The building & construction industry utilizes several equipment that require specialized lubrication to get rid of breakdowns and site stoppages. Continuous maintenance and lubrication of equipment in the construction sector is important to achieve long life-span of equipment, its correct operation and high efficiency, and fuel savings. Several types of construction lubricants are available in the market such as biodegradable oils; gear, gearbox and transmission oils; high-speed greases; and heavy load greases. The market for lubricants is expected to register a CAGR of around 2% in the future. The major factor driving the market, as per Mordor Intelligence Report, is the increasing demand for high-performance lubricants (owing to their better and improved properties, such as reduced flammability, reduced gear wear, and increased service life). However, increasing drain intervals in the automotive and industrial sectors are expected to hinder the growth of the market studied.

Growing demand


Engine oils are widely used to lubricate internal combustion engines and are generally composed of 75-90% base oils and 10-25% additives. They are typically used for applications, such as wear reduction, corrosion protection, and smooth operation of engine internals. They function by creating a thin film between the moving parts for enhancing the transfer of heat and reducing tension during the contact of parts. High-mileage engine oils are in demand lately, owing to the properties that help in the prevention of oil leaks and reduction of oil consumption.


Most of the light and heavy vehicle diesel and gasoline engines use 10W40 and 15W40 viscosity-grade oils, whereas, multi-grade oils, like 15W50 and 20W50, are used for aircraft engines. The light motor vehicle segment records the highest consumption rate of engine oils among all the segments. Owing to the technological improvements and government-mandated requirements for fuel economy, the automakers have been manufacturing lighter vehicles with tighter tolerances (which make the vehicles more durable). Owing to the increased engine oil change intervals, technological advancements are imposing a threat to the growth of the engine oil segment, in terms of volume consumption. However, with the growing automotive fleet on road, the consumption of engine oil is projected to increase, but at a slower pace, in the near future.

(SBU-Greases & Lubricants), says, “Overall lubricant consumption in India is projected to grow at an annual rate of 3% over the next five years. Automotive, transport and increase in construction & infrastructure development will continue to drive the growth. PCMO & MCO segment will register higher growth percentage in next few years with lower viscosity grades & synthetic blends gaining more share of volume. The consumer segment to grow the fastest, followed by the commercial and industrial lubricant segments. Increasing drain intervals in the automotive and industrial sectors and the modest impact of electric vehicles in the future are likely to hinder the market growth in next 5-10 years horizon. ”







According to Shankar Karnik, General Manager, Industrial Lubricants, Exxonmobil India “The lubricants market in India is robust and expected to grow consistently at a CAGR of 4. 64% over the next five years. The construction and mining equipment sectors are the areas where we expect strong demand in the coming years. This growth can be attributed to green field projects, capacity expansions and embracing of new technology in key sectors like construction and mining”.
