Industry Focus- Excavators Attachments










The worldwide market for Excavator Attachments is expected to grow at a CAGR of roughly 4.6% over the next five years and will reach $5900 million in 2024 from $4710 million in 2019. The excavator attachment industry has developed and matured the world over and is surely and steadily gaining ground in India, writes RAJINDER RAINA.







Excavators are one of the most used earthmoving machines because it is an enormously useful piece of equipment that can make work sites run far more effectively and efficiently. However, excavator itself is just a platform or a mother vehicle. The real benefits accrue from the wide range of specialized attachments and tools that can be attached/mounted on it for carrying out a slew of job applications. This is besides the changes and variations that are brought about in the excavator itself to make it a special purpose/customized equipment. Given the tools and attachments that are available in the market today, it is difficult to spell out the number of attachments that can be fitted on the excavator. Accordingly, there can be number of attachments that can be clubbed together based upon the application where the excavators deploy. Some of the major attachments are :-



BUCKETS – An excavator can be fitted with a variety of buckets based on the size, shape and metallurgy of the bucket which is decided by the job application. These buckets are fitted depending upon the nature of the work, requisite productivity & the primary objective for which the excavator is deployed. We can have a wide, a deep, a shallow, a narrow and a hard rock bucket that can be fitted interchangeably on the same machine in the same excavator. The bucket shape, size & the dimensions vary for jobs like good earth excavation, murrum soil, hard rock, mining of various materials/ores, muck, trenching & deep excavation & special purpose excavation.



BOOM and DIPPER ARM – This combination can be changed proportionately as well as independently. A short boom and dipper arm can be used for hard rock, metal excavations and similar tough applications. A long dipper arm can be used for water bodies, wet/marshy lands and other excavation works where the negative reach is more. The boom can be longer where an extended ground reach is needed. There are other combinations also available through variations of the length of boom and dipper arm. There are excavators that offer an option of adjustable dipper arm length.



FRONT SHOVEL – Some excavators have the option for use as a front shovel which acts more as a pay loader with negative reach within constraint areas like tunnels etc. in this case the bucket is fitted like a shovel rather than a backhoe.


ROCK BREAKERS – The most used attachment in this category is the Hydraulic Rock Breaker. These rock breakers are used for primary and secondary demolition of various materials and applications by changing their front tool chisel, blunt tool, wedge and moil point. Rock breakers are used for RCC, demolition of buildings and other structures and downsizing/crushing of rocks and boulders, hard ground with faults, mass excavation in quarry, reinforced concrete & block splitting etc.


RIPPERS – Various types of rippers are used as attachments on excavators for ripping up tough/frozen ground, a hard rock or paved areas. Rippers are used as the first break attachment to dig out things from their roots or their contact from the base. It is a simple tool that can be used in construction and demolition projects at the very inception of projects like mining, hydel power, metal mining and road construction in high and hostile terrains.


CRUSHER BUCKETS – Disposing of unwanted material is a critical part of construction or demolition job and for these tasks, the crusher bucket is indispensable. These buckets are used for demolition, excavation, recycling, quarries, mines, road works and piping. These buckets help avoid the necessity to haul waste material offsite for disposal as one is able to manage the process on the go. These buckets are standard as well as custom designed depending upon the material to be handled.


GRABS and GRAPPLES – As the name suggests these attachments are used to grab and move large rocks around. This simple looking attachment requires a great deal of precision in construction so as to make sure that they are able to operate in the field as intended. For example a good rock grab needs to be designed to be properly balanced; a poorly balanced grab will struggle to grip and move a rock around. Rock grabs should also be robust and wear resistance at the gripping points called fingers. Worn out fingers find it difficult to grip, can lose the grip and are unable to operate to full efficiency. In order to maintain strength a rock grab’s pivot pins should be hardened and finger lined tips should be replaceable.



Demolition Attachments: CUTTER CRUSHERS & PULVERIZERS:


The Cutter-Crushers are specifically designed attachments for demolition purposes. These are equipped with a sealed slew ring that only requires standard greasing, and eliminates the need for maintenance. The robust machine has a protected cylinder, a wide jaw opening and effective breaker tooth for high productivity and enhanced performance. The Cutter-Crushers are suitable for crushing concrete, breaking objects, and cutting of reinforcement bars.

Pulverizers are capable of minimizing concrete block size, asphalt excavation, post-demolition reinforcement separation, and material sorting and loading. Pulverizers provides an ideal choice for industrial pulverizing applications. Pulverizers comprise a fixed, broad jaw design that minimizes maintenance and increases productivity, and elongated indexable and changeable cutting blades. Compaction plates are finding increasing acceptance as a useful tool for worksite. These replace the hand-held plate compactors where the quantum of work is high and a higher degree of soil compaction is needed. Places like ports, reclamation areas, basements of high-rise buildings and benching in open cast mines. The ease of doing work with compaction plates is pretty high because of the 360 degree swivel head attachment to ensure maximum versatility on the job. Additionally, a compaction plate will be designed in such a way that pressure exerted by the boom on the top plate causes the mounts to convert from shear to compression mode.





An auger driver is a precision instrument designed for digging straight downwards – creating holes that can be used for post, trees, poles and other vertical support systems that need to be driven straight down into the soil. This large screw shaped tool has a helical screw blade that allows for precision as they bore into a surface and drag the material displaced in the process out of the hole. The humble tilt bucket is the most iconic piece of equipment that is used on an excavator. It is a timeless tool designed to make the process of trenching and digging a snap. It’s strange that with so much of trenching and digging work going around across India, this tool finds very little usage. A good tilt bucket should feature 2 key things. Firstly, it should be shaped in just the right way to maximize the digging effectiveness of the bucket. There should be a sharp ridge on the edge to help the bucket penetrate the soil material. From there, the bucket should be tilted at 45 degrees forming a perfect angle for digging, while also keeping the material collected in the bucket. This one attachment has to be pushed into the Indian market where after it will find the requisite pull and demand.




There are times when we encounter very tough material during excavation which might be a high density rock. Such rocks need rock saws to cut through. The rock saws can be used to cut through concrete, roads or big stones. A rock saw is a high powered large saw that gives the operator the most safe and efficient mechanism to get the job done. The accuracy it provides because of a cut out of a specific part of a rock or road or building without damaging the adjoining area, material or structure. These rocks of blades are made of special material – the better the blade, more precise the cut and better the results. Various sizes of blades are also available for different applications.




A compaction wheel is a heavy mechanical tool that is designed to reduce the size of waste material or soil through compaction. With the increased use of hydraulic excavators in solid waste management, compaction wheels would be an ideal attachment for compaction of solid waste in land reclamation and other earth fills. The best part of compaction wheel is that it can compact any and every material including variety of solid waste which cannot be compacted by standard compactors. The compaction wheels come with pad foots which ensure the desired compaction and working efficiency.




Sieve bucket is an enormously useful heavy duty tool used in applications where there are different materials and you need a screening device to help sort between those materials. Sieve buckets are simple in construction but the difference in quality between them can be enormous. While selecting a sieve bucket we must look at the strength of the bottom end, which is important in the machine being able to carry a load across the entire width of the bucket. The shape of the bucket is also important as it should be designed to ensure efficient loading and sorting of materials. A good cutting edge on the bucket facilitates better digging. You need to ensure that the ribs and apertures are of the right size to sift out the finer material keeping the required/larger material inside the bucket. This is the reason that there are wide range of sieve buckets available.




A strange sounding and equally strange looking attachment, ERKAT is a highly useful tool in a wide variety of situations. This tool also needs to be introduced in the Indian market because it can help with trenching in ultra-tough terrains, tunneling, foundation, demolition and soil mixing projects. It can be used effectively in residential areas and other brown field applications where it is important not to disturb the surroundings. In operation, ERKAT twin head makes use of two hydraulic motors that generate powerful torque to cut through materials in an accurate and efficient manner. The very design of this attachment makes it highly sophisticated, where from the excavated material can be put to reuse.




There are many other attachments & tools that is used world over but have not made foray into the Indian market. Use of attachments is one of the signs of evaluation & maturity of an equipment. These attachments need to be offered in the Indian market as a concept wherein the sellers have to educate the users about the cost benefit & ROI analysis. Retrofitting, particularly in real estate segment in tier I & II cities, will offer opportunities for these attachments & drive sales of excavators. Attachments is a fairly untapped market in India but it is certain that most of them will penetrate into the market in due course of time.
