Known for setting new Benchmarks

Global player JCB offers a varied range of machines in different capacities and applications. In an exclusive interview to CONSTRUCTION OPPORTUNITIES,

JASMEET SINGH, HEAD - CORPORATE COMMUNICATIONS & EXTERNAL RELATIONS, JCB INDIA LTD., discusses about their latest products and the new cutting edge technology featured in their Excavator range.

Tell us about the range of excavators offered by you, in terms of types, and applications, cutting edge technology featured in your machines. What distinguishes your excavators from competitors?

JCB currently offers a comprehensive range of excavators starting from 3T mini excavator to 37T hydraulic excavator to cater to different applications. The 3T machine known as JCB30Plus is an ideal equipment to use in compact spaces whereas the 37T machine known as the JCB370LC is primarily used in large scale infrastructure or mining projects.

Apart from this, we offer excavators in the following range – the JS81 (8T), the JS120 (12T), the JS140 (14T). During Bauma Conexpo in 2016, we introduced three excavators in the larger category - the JCB 220LC Xtra, a 22T tracked excavator, the JCB 305LC, a 30T tracked excavator and the JCB370LC, a 37T hydraulic excavator.

In terms of performance, the all new 22T excavator, JCB220LC Xtra, a state-of-the-art machine comes with the gross power of 170 hp and a bucket capacity range of 0.8 cum to 1.2 cum. It is 8 per cent more fuel efficient. With 8 Power Modes and Smart Controls - this machine is 7 per cent more productive in H+ mode. It comes with Livelink and Air Conditioning as standard.

Similarly, the JCB 305LC comes with JCB Diesel Max engine and delivers 221HP for excellent productivity. 222kN of bucket breakout force makes it easy to remove any thing that comes beneath, thereby improving the productivity.

Provision of ECO, Power and H+ work mode to suit the job requirement makes it more productive. Innovative hydraulic regeneration system reduces the cycle time and improves productivity. JCB machines are known for offering world class efficiency and operator comfort, and our tracked excavator range is no different.

In addition to world class products, after sales support is critical and greatly contribute to the reliability of the machine. Over the years, we have set-up the largest distribution network in the industry with 63 dealers and 650 outlets. These outlets provide professional product support and service to our customers with the help of over 6,000 trained professionals. Each of these outlets has trained manpower and adequate parts stock.

To address the challenge of machines which are operating in deep interiors of difficult and arduous Indian sites, we also have mobile vans that operate on the concept of ‘Workshop-on-Wheels.’ These vans are fully equipped to handle most service and repair jobs on JCB machines.

Additionally, we have initiated various customer connect programmes and service campaigns wherein our trained service engineers visit the customer site across India and offer Service and Parts support.

With this comprehensive range of excavators backed by a strong product support network, JCB is well positioned to cater to varied applications and customer requirements.

Give us an understanding of their key features in terms of safety, ease of operating, operator comfort , cost efficiency etc. their specific advantages.

Customers are looking for machines which are productive, efficient, reliable, and most importantly, safe to operate. Also, another important aspect is low machine maintenance as the operational cost of an excavator forms a significant part of the ownership cost.

JCB machines are known for setting new benchmarks in the industry - whether in design or technology. At JCB, all our products are designed, engineered, and manufactured after carefully studying customer requirements.

On the technology front, one of the noteworthy features in our range of excavators is the JCB Livelink - an advanced telematics technology that helps our customers to remotely manage their fleets. This state-of-the-art technology enables users to get SMS alerts on their mobile phones or smart devices regarding service alerts, operations and security of their machines. The information is available in real time regarding the health of the machine including engines, and gives vital information to the customer in terms of number of hours the machine has been operational, service intervals, fuel levels, malfunctions if any, etc. On the design aspect, JCB has made some significant advancement to suit customer requirements, such as; robust structures, comfortable operator cabin, and easy access for maintenance etc. JCB provides low effort joystick levers in its excavators and fully adjustable operator seat helps in long fatigue free operation. The cabin is spacious with large internal space and is mounted on viscous mounts to absorb vibrations. Ergonomically placed, low-effort operator controls minimise operator fatigue.

In-cab ventilation is provided via a roof hatch and rear sliding window providing the operator with a cool working environment. JCB’s recently introduced 22T excavator – the JCB 220LC Xtra has air conditioner as a standard. Similarly, our 37T Excavator - the JCB 370LC comes with high capacity multi-stage fuel filtration to further guarantee durability and provides up to 25 per cent fuel savings than its predecessors. A rigid, fully-welded, X-frame undercarriage provides excellent durability through robust design. Additional heavy-duty wear strips are provided in the dipper for additional strength and protection from any external damage. The machine features a solid, stable, work platform for fast cycle times.

Aftermarket services as a strategic differentiator.

After Sales Support is the key in the ECE industry. Whilst the in-built features of a machine are evaluated, the product support plays a crucial role in the buying decision. We are now seeing a trend in the industry wherein the customers want complete products solutions rather than standalone product.

To cater to his growing need, JCB introduced “Premier Line Solutions” designed to give maximum value to its customers. It is a comprehensive range of customised support packages, innovatively designed to offer real time and proactive product support solutions.

JCB Livelink has also transformed the manner in which equipment is supported. Livelink ensures that customers can manage and monitor their fleet remotely through their smartphones or mobile devices. All JCB customers with Livelink enabled machines get SMS alerts on their mobile phones or smart devices regarding service, operations, and security of their machines.

To monitor these machines in real time, JCB has set up a world class Central Command Centre at their Ballabgarh facility. JCB dealerships have also set up similar Livelink command centres to ensure that real time support is provided to customers. Over 45,000 Livelink enabled machines are successfully working in India.

Apart from this, we presently offer the best product support network in India with 63 dealers and 650 outlets, which further employ 6,000 professionally trained personnel. These far-reaching outlets provide the vital product support to customers for their equipment.

Do you offer equipment finance or do you have tie-ups with finance companies for the same.

JCB has strategic tie-ups with all leading Banks and NBFC’s who provide attractive financial schemes to our customers.

Your outlook for the rentals market.

The overall outlook for the excavator rental is positive as it is an extremely important area which supports the growth of Excavators and also contributes to machine availability. However, the rental market in India is largely fragmented with many individual players thus, presenting an opportunity to consolidate.

It will continue to be an important factor in the overall equipment industry for years to come.

Which sectors are major demand drivers for your products?

Looking at the investments that have been committed by the Government for the infrastructure sector, we are hopeful of a positive growth trend in this segment. Excavator is vital equipment in the overall chain of events at the work site, and performs a crucial task of keeping the process moving. As more large scale infra and mining projects are announced and implemented, the need for specialised machinery will grow, which includes tracked excavators.

Though excavators are used in number of applications, sectors such as Roads and Highways, Railways, Mining, and Irrigation etc. will be the prime business drivers for this category.
